Waterproofing for a cool, damp coastal climate.
Devonport’s North-West Coast climate is cool and wet for much of the year, and bathrooms here dry slowly. That makes AS 3740 waterproofing the single most important part of the job. We membrane the full wet area, take it up the walls and over the shower hob to the required heights, and book the mandatory inspection before tiling. A bathroom that fails waterproofing rots the frame and chipboard floor silently for years. We do not let that happen on a Devonport job.
The Tasmanian permit and plumbing pathway.
Under the Tasmanian Building Act 2016, a like-for-like bathroom renovation is often Low Risk work needing no building permit, but all plumbing must be done by a licensed plumber and certified through the TasWater and plumbing permit process. The moment you move the toilet, alter a wall or change the drainage, it steps up to Notifiable or Permit-level and a building surveyor is involved. We confirm the right pathway with Devonport City Council before demolition, so there are no surprises at handover or at sale.
Older Devonport housing stock and hidden conditions.
A lot of Devonport, East Devonport and Latrobe homes are mid-century weatherboard and brick-veneer with original wet areas. Behind the tiles we routinely find perished membranes, timber-rot around the old shower base, and undersized drainage. We strip back to frame, assess the substrate, and quote honestly on what we find rather than tiling over a problem. Older homes are our normal, not our exception.
